Public transport ‘needs to be brought into the 21st century’

Transport managers need to focus on the needs of people who use public transport, and make the system better able to manage them, the head of the Australian Federal Transport Commission has said.

Al Jazeera’s Mark Hetherington reports.

“It is really important to look at what our infrastructure needs to be able to handle the increasing volume of people that are moving around in a more connected world,” Nesta Bannister told Al Jazeera.

“We need people in public transport to work with us, and we need people to be on public transport.””

I think the more you move around the city, the more people you have to move with you and the more time you have on public transportation the better it will be for you.””

We need people in public transport to work with us, and we need people to be on public transport.”

I think the more you move around the city, the more people you have to move with you and the more time you have on public transportation the better it will be for you.

“Public transport system managers are currently responsible for the day-to-day running of the public transport system, with the Federal Government providing the funding for new rail and bus services.”

When we’re talking about the transport infrastructure, I would like to see it put to use in ways that support the environment, in ways where we are supporting our environment, our environment is a big part of that,” Mr Bannisters told Al JA.”

In many ways it is a part of the environment as well, that is one of the reasons that people have chosen to live in the CBD, as opposed to the city centre.

“So I would really like to get that done.”

The commissioner’s comments come after he called for the public sector to embrace the technology of drones, in a speech to the Federal Parliament on Tuesday.

Mr Bannishers comments come as Australia’s Transport Minister Kevin Andrews announced a major overhaul of the Public Transport Management System (PTMS), which is the public-private partnership between the Commonwealth, the States and Territory to manage the operation of public transport systems.

Mr Andrews said the change would see public transport managers more effectively manage the system, including using drones to help with the “unusual” use of public infrastructure.

“For instance, in Sydney there is a major new railway coming to town, a big train station, a new tram line and an old tram line, so the public can access the train and the tram lines on their own time,” he said.

“And the Public Transit Management System has got to be up to date to keep up with this, and it is going to be, and will be, a significant improvement.”

Mr Andrews also announced that the PTMS would be updated to support the construction of high-speed rail from Melbourne to Adelaide.

The Minister said the new system was set to be fully operational by 2021.

“The PTMS is one piece of infrastructure that is essential to our future prosperity and prosperity of our region, and that is what we are looking at now,” he told the House of Representatives.

“What we are really looking at is the integration of the PTms with other public transport management systems, and the ability of that integration to make sure we are delivering the right service and delivering the appropriate infrastructure.”

Mr Bancister also called for a focus on using drones, which could save public transport billions of dollars each year.

“With a lot of the money that we spend on drones, and a lot more money that is spent on drones by airlines, we don’t know how much of that money we’re actually saving,” he explained.

“That’s the key thing to look for.

Is there an opportunity to take that money and put it towards things like better infrastructure and better public transport?

Is there a way that we can get that money back into public transport that we really need?”
