Why Sydney’s new train network is a model for other cities

Updated September 29, 2018 11:12:27The new train line between Sydney and Newcastle is expected to open in the next few weeks, but how will commuters travel on it?

The new rail network between Sydney’s North and South Circulars will be the first in Australia to be fully connected to the new MetroRail, a high-speed rail system that is currently under construction between Brisbane and Melbourne.

It will also be the third-busiest rail network in the world, and the first to be able to provide a direct line to the city’s CBD, the centre of Sydney’s CBD.

The line will connect Newcastle with its North and West Circular suburbs and will connect South Circularity with its inner suburbs, including the suburb of Bondi Junction, which is also home to the World Heritage-listed Opera House.

This means the entire network will be accessible via public transport, which means passengers will be able take the train to work, to work-related events, to the shops and cafes in the CBD and even to shopping centres like the Woolworths or The Reserve.

Transport for NSW (TfNSW) chief executive Mark Williams said the new rail line would be the world’s first, with Sydney’s other existing trains already being linked to the network.

“We are very excited that we have now the first line to connect the CBD to the inner suburbs,” he said.

“The first line will also connect Newcastle to the outer suburbs of Bondor and West Bondi.”

Mr Williams said he expected to be on the first train in Sydney for about six weeks.

“It is a big undertaking but we are very confident we can do it and we will deliver a service that is going to be absolutely fantastic for commuters,” he told 7.30.

“And we are hoping to have it up and running for some time in the first half of 2019.”

TfNW is already operating a commuter rail service between the city and the South Coast, and a new commuter line is scheduled to open next year between the South and North Circular districts.

“What’s interesting about the South Circulator, which will be a commuter line, is that it’s a very good service to the CBD,” Mr Williams said.”[That’s] because of the connection to the train station and because of what’s happening with the train line.”

Mr Wood said the train network was the best in the region, and he hoped it would continue to improve.

“This is a great example of a region that has a lot of capacity, and it’s going to improve over time,” he added.

“So we’re really looking forward to having that service and hopefully some of the other rail links as well.”

Mr Woods said he hoped the new line would help attract tourists, and encourage people to return to Sydney.

“You have to go to Newcastle to get out and enjoy the CBD, it’s the best city in Australia,” he explained.

“When people come here they are not just going to have a great time, they’re going to enjoy it for its own sake.”

The train line will be open from May 2019, but it will only be available on weekends.
